Hi everyone, I was recently given a lovely hard wood bureau but before sending it down and re-varnishing it I thought I'd better see if do the work to it would ruin the value (if any) of it. I was also given a very large hardwood set of drawer and a umbrella stand so im told. I currently on have pictures of the bureau if anyone could help me ?

Post the pics. I rarely recommend sanding. Most furniture can be touched up nicely or refinished without sanding.

English oak 20s-30s. Doesn't look like it needs much to me. Not terribly valuable so sprucing it up will not devalue.

The veneer in both center sections, from what I can see, looks like it can use some maybe professional work.....better images would be more telling.....at least it looks like veneer to me above.....IMHO....

Ok so I should see about getting it sorted will it be worth the money to warrant the cost of a professional I'll try getting some better pics later and some of the chest of drawers. Any idea what make/model erm type? Of bureau it is?

If Brad says it's not terribly valuable.....a professional laying on of hands will almost certainly send your cost thru the roof.................imho..!

Rob, you are in the UK.
I get these all the time from house clearances.
No one wants brown furniture any more.
Brad is correct, its from the 20`s-30`s.
I can`t give them away and charity shops refuse them.
Some people donate them on freecycle.
I remove the hardware for use on other items and take the rest to the tip.

My suggestion only applies if you are REALLY in LOVE with the piece of furniture and plan on keeping it!!! Trying to fix veneer can and probably will get pricey!!!! And I really have NO expertise on how to do THAT!!!! AND, I trust what Verybrad, Komo and Davey have to say.....they've been around here a while!!!:happy::happy::happy:

Can't tell much on your second piece from this blurry pic. Looks to be older .... say late 19th century. Likely missing a mirror. No great value there either.

I think the drawers may be older, more and better photo`s are required, it looks pine.
The top looks shiny as if it has been covered or polished but its hard to tell.
Open one of the drawers and stick your thumb nail into the interior wood, if it goes in easily its a good sign of European Pine (softwood)
