    It is from Kashmir, northwestern India.
    Can't see the scene very well because of the reflections. People paying tribute to a Nawab?

    Why German?

    i looked at paper mache eggs online and seemed that most originated in Germany as easter eggs and the scene on the egg had a religious look to me so thought easter and german

    I understand, not very German in style though.;)
    Kashmir produces a lot of papier maché boxes and decorative items, many of them eggs. Probably has to do with life symbolism.

    I had a couple of German ones and a Greek one. All three had patterned paper glued to the inside.

    I remember that from the big papier maché Easter eggs we had as children. I think they were ca 1900, and every year my mother would put small candy eggs in them for us.
    The Kashmiri eggs are lacquered on the inside, these are just extremely worn, or someone put something inside that ate away at the lacquer.
