image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg I'm inquiring about this painting, haven't seen it in person. Sorry the pictures aren't the best. I swear I've seen this kind of portrait of man somewhere. It may not be the same man but very close it technique. I'm hoping someone else has seen this kind of painting before. If you notice, there appears to be a signature behind the frame. Is it a Mexican man or some other?

It is a character study. Paintings such as this have been done for eons with different types becoming popular at different times. Latin subjects have been particularly popular here in the US since the 50s or so. In the 50s you saw a lot of Spanish bullfighters and such. This looks more like a young romanticized gaucho to me.

Reminded me of a photo of Pancho Villa, but it's not.

This is the closest I could find but ??????
Robert S. Nemeth is an artist.

Primarily a figure painter and draftsman, I try to look honestly at the world around me, at moments in time. By blending real and the surreal to capture both our purity and our trepidations, I explore a subtlety of mood, feeling and gesture using a diversity of media. With a sensual uncomforting presence, often my images will hint at a narrative to make a connection or a contradiction to the audience's humanity.

A Philadelphia based artist, I am a Graduate of Temple university's Tyler School of Art. I have contributed work for editorial articles, fantsy art, and comic books. My art has been realized through poetry books, album covers, role playing games, and even tattoo flash. I have had the privilege of participating in local exhibitions, alone and with other local artists, and also have work in several personal collections. For a short while I worked as a private drawing instructor.

Art has been a vehicle for me to broaden my own horizons, as well as those of others. Luck has found me in my travels. I have met and worked with many creative people. As an artist, I'll continue to follow the line.

image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Here are some better pictures. I wish I could see the sig behind the frame. Might ask the seller to take it out of the frame. They're asking $325 for it but I think I can talk them down to $275. There's a list of artist with last name Nemeth. I was wondering if on the S. on the verso, could be a G. My G's look a lot like that S on the verso.

    Armando,

I hope you take this in the spirit in which it is given..... It seems like you have a zeal for art collecting and wish to accumulate a collection of some importance. This is admirable. However, to my thinking, you need to be able to focus your resources better. A couple of the potential acquisitions you have brought here seem to belie your supposed wishes.

While this appears to be a nice painting, I see nothing in it that says that this is investment quality art. It is relatively new and by an artist that you have , so far, unidentified. By my thinking, it is the kind of painting that can be picked up for less than $50.00 just about anywhere. Yet, you are seriously thinking about spending $275.00 on it.

I know that value in art can be very subjective. I also know that if you like something and plan to keep it, the amount of money paid is somewhat inconsequential. I guess my question to you is do you really like this painting that much or do you see this as part of a serious collection? If it is the former, than go ahead and purchase it.

The kind of money you are proposing spending on a couple of the art purchases you have brought here would buy some nice investment quality art. There are paintings by listed artists with good track records available for under $300.00 regularly. Buying art because it is what you see will not necessarily build the kind of collection you seem to want. I think you need to focus and dig a bit deeper.

As a collector of art myself with a few hundred paintings, I know your passion. I am all for buying art that you see out and about if it is dirt cheap. I regularly buy paintings in the under $25.00 range without a lot of thought. Some of these are nice paintings that I keep because I like them or sell them for a small profit. I have learned to pass by quite a lot regardless of price because of the amateur quality of the art. It takes awhile to hone your eye and selling art helps to do this.

When I think about spending more serious money on a painting, I think long and hard about it and do my research. If I really like a painting, I may spend a bit more on it than I think it is worth. I rarely have to do that. I generally buy art from first sources such as estate sales, thrift stores, on ebay, or at auction. I also have a couple pickers that bring me art. I rarely buy from retail venues. In general, the value is not there.

I buy quite a bit of art for resale without much regard for whether or not I like it. When buying for my own collection, I am pretty picky. I don't necessarily focus on listed artists but it never hurts to do so. If I am going to spend more than a few hundred, the artist better be listed.

I guess my point in all this is that there is a lot of art out there to buy. If you have limited resources, you need to focus those resources to best effect. Buying art because it is what you see may not be the best approach. I think digging a little deeper will bring you better value. You might also want to consider selling some of your art. It is a great way to hone your interests, make a bit of profit, and further your collection.

Just my opinion for what it is worth. I appreciate your passion about art and wish you the best in creating a collection to be proud of.

I have not purchased this painting yet, due to the fact that I'm waiting to see if the owner will remove the painting from the frame to reveal the signature. Upon doing so, I can research for that artist and hopefully find comparable prices. If they don't show me the sig, then yes, it would be a very irrational decision to buy this at $275 without having a positive id on a listed artist.

I'm wanting to collect pieces from listed artist. I do get a little ahead of myself when buying paintings but over the last year, I've calmed down and looked for the artist before buying a piece. Now, if a piece is original, and the artist that I know not of, and I like it, I try to compare prices with similar subject matter and time frame to make a sound call on a price.

I'm just a collector. On the same hand, I don't want to collect junk. Investment wise, yes that's also my priority. I know you've read where I never plan on selling any of my pieces. I see it as, I work to hard to sell something that I've worked my tail off getting. Yes, to have some serious money for my future grand kids, if they ever feel like liquated, is a thought. Hopefully though, they appreciate art as much as I do.

It's like my baseball card collection, only Ruth's, Aaron's, May's and Mantle's. Oh ya, can't forget Derek Jeter.
