Rumor among cannon collectors has it that a collection of about 1000 antique cannons was sold out of an estate in Germany to a US party about a year ago. We know that collection existed because a reliable former employee of Christie’s has seen it but won’t give further info. I’m somewhat interested in an academic sense if anyone has any who/where info.

    Spring,

In the world of Cannon collecting. Is this considered a large collection?

Yes, I collected them for 40 years and only had about 225 when I sent them all to auctions. An individual could only have accumulated 1000 if he started collecting say in the 1940’s I’d guess.

    Hi,
A friend took me to a cannon collector in NY. He had a special three story garage and elevator built to help his cannons to different floors. he had thousands of muskets and other Revolutionary War items. I knew he had at least 600 cannons. They were all in just an ordinary house on an ordinary street. It was staggering to see what all he collected.

Yes Denny’s a friend, but he wouldn’t have 600 cannons, maybe 60 but that still sounds high to me. Did you see any of his sculptures? He’s a very talented artist. He was crew chief of a B-36 bomber in the 50’s.

    Hi Spring,
That is him. I was just blown away with his collection. I only saw 20 or 30 cannons on the floor of the storage area. His wife says he has them all over the place. She was laughing but I could tell she was serious. I never knew about his sculptors. My friend said he was a very quiet person and was afraid of the neighbors reactions to his collections. I see now that he is really opened up. You have to remember this was 25 years ago that I met him. Thank you for the websites.

I love this forum, for that kind of information.
I used to work for a guy who has a collection of printing presses. I mean the big ones!
I had a customer who collected safes (again big heavy stuff!).
And just reading a book about WW I U boats, in witch they state that a (still fully working) diesel engine was recently sold (by Hermann Historica)to a old engines collector. Those engines weight over 15 ton...
BTW, a old cannon tube was presented to me a few months ago, price was 25.000 euro, don't know if it is still there....

Phaik, what a coincidence! I’m taking a wild guess that since the price matches, we may be discussing the same item, a rather small but elaborate model. If so just as a matter of my habits I’m checking into the offeror’s credentials and reputation. If it is one L.K., do you know him? He’s Dutch but I don’t know where he lives. And he doesn’t possess the item, he’s selling it for a person in another country, so any deal would be a bit convoluted.
