Hello everyone, just seeing if anyone can help me with figuring out the origins and possibly dating this chair.

I picked it up at an auction yesterday but can find nothing like it online.
In the description it said is was 19th century but the legs seem a little newer to me(but I know nothing about these things). Looks European but what do you all think?

I was really drawn to the oil painting of the monks on the chair back which is why I had to buy it. There is no signature or markings of any sort on it.
    Thanks for looking!

Would say early 20th century tavern chair, though it probably never found use in a tavern.

Oh nice, thanks for the input . I really appreciate it. Now I just have to find which country it originated from, possible Germany from my research. But I’ll keep digging

Could be German but wouldn't be surprised to see it being English or, possibly, American. The monk's drinking motif was a popular one in all three countries (and I am sure others).

It isn't a chair form I recognise as being English, but hey. I wondered about Dutch: those monks look as though they might be. Although one is a cardinal.

Was going to throw Dutch in there as well but figured I would cover it with the others bit. While the monks painting may look Dutch, many Dutch motifs were popular when this was made and painted on furniture in other countries. I was thinking Franciscan so that could also give many origins.
