OK, speaking (indirectly, by mentioning Sauvage) of trompe l'oeil, think my blurry eyes are being fooled by accumulated dust around the upper edge. I'm liking the cut from a piece of furniture hypothesis: otherwise I think the edges of the 'frames' would have been finished. The stuff on the back makes me think that at some time they were mounted into larger surrounding frames. The crookedly attached hangers at another time?

If may be Indonesian. But if it was mass produced why can't I find another example?

These do look a bit like they are carved from Indonesian plantation hardwood from the back. Think the fronts exhibit finer quality than we usually see in such pieces. Doubt we can ever really pin these down. Just no context to them at this point.

Most Indonesian hardwood is exported, and has been for centuries. The Dutch couldn't have made all that gorgeous marquetry without it:

It was a little chilly this Christmas morning here in Miami - low 70's! And the usual 90% humidity was gone - so I was able to wear my Dolphins jacket!

Thank you again! - I used the words in the titles & listed them as STUNNING ANTIQUE PAIR HAND CARVED WOOD PUTTI CHERUB ANGEL WALL MOUNT and I listed them at $150 or best offer - after only 10 views I got an offer for $100 & accepted it!

Hi, can you please tell me more about these oval putti plaques, particularly the top one, with the putto head between the legs of another putto. I have recently acquired this exact plaque and I’m having trouble getting info on it. Is is plaster or alabaster or other material and do you know how old it is and/or the maker info?
    Thanks, Andy
