This certainly looks to be a painting, likely paper attached to canvas to add stability and prevent future damage. I really like this work, it's wonderful. I am an amateur art collector and I think you did well.

 

and Friedrich Heimerdinger (1817 Altona - 1882 Hamburg) was quite a well known artist, with a few sales at major auction houses. Subject is everything with this era, an artist can have one painting sell for $50,000 and another for $500 at the same time. Children and animals usually do well, portraits not so much.

 

The rooster painting has “Visetti” within some ink-stamped text. Maybe it has something in common with this one:

I have to wonder about anything like this which bears an ink stamp. Could it be an oilene?

Well, given my experience (I do not profess to be an expert) your painting would certainly be desirable to the market and likely could achieve a good sum at auction. I believe someone missed the boat on that signature when evaluating it, and as a result you got a real bargain!
