Been after one of these for a while. Fully examined by two numismatists for authenticity.

It better be authentic for the price I paid. Got it from a dealership with 85 years’ expertise.

    92.5% solid sterling silver!!

In return for supplying better photos, maybe someone here can answer a question for me.

When did the minting of Pieces of Eight START and END? I can't seem to find any reliable dates.

The Spanish had mints in Spain, Mexico,Philippines and many other places in South America, they all minted Reales that were very similar apart from the mintmarks.
I`m too busy to check right now.

The dates I'm getting are 1497 - 1869, as being the length of time, from the creation of the dollar, to its obsolescence. Is this correct?

Also, what do the markings around the edge of the coin represent?

I can see the 8R for 8 Reales, the date (1802). Hispan. Et. Ind. Rex is presumably King of Spain and the Indies. What is the ME that comes after it, or the I.I. in the top left corner?

The only thing I can tell for certain is that it's all written in Latin.

I'm STILL trying to find dates here.

When did Pieces of Eight, Spanish Dollars or 8 Reale coins start being made, and when did they stop?

So far I've found two sources which list the 1500s, and one source which lists 1497, as starting dates.

I've also found other sources which list ending-dates as 1825, 1868, and 1869.

    ...I'm getting incredibly confused.

Why do you think .925 fineness?

    I don't think, that's what I was told.

The Spanish struck ones are 0.903 silver, older Mexican & Peruvian ones can be 0.917 silver.

OK. The one I have is from Peru I think, so that'd be 91% :)

So Dave do you know anything about the dates?

I'm fairly convinced now, based on what I've read, that the coin was introduced in 1497 (or shortly thereafter).

But when did they die out? I still can't figure that out.

My Krause catalogues start at 1601,

8 Reales were struck at the Mexico mint between 1598-1621 but look nothing like the more modern 19th century examples.
They show 1601 examples from Spain and most of the Spanish provences including Majorca
All are 0.9306 silver but many were not milled they were hammered.
Some years they were called Escudos which is the Portuguese version.
Then some are called Ducaton and Patagon under Spanish Netherlands, Flanders and Tournai.

Then it becomes a nightmare :D

1864 is the last mention of Reales under Spain in my books

    I have it now.
What you see as ME is in fact a Monogram of LIMA, the mint from Peru.

    Your Coin.

Mint marks explanation, Yours is the middle one.

The I & J after 8R are the Assayers initials.

Here is the catalogue value of your coin in Krause, I would describe your coin as VG (Very Good) so around $25-$30 US.
Its nearly 0.90 silver so not quite Sterling.
It should weigh no less than 27grams, the book says 27.0674, allow a little for wear.
