I think it's a father with 2 sons. Note how he has one hand on the leg of the child he carries, and his other hand rests on the head of the other.

The seated child holds a turtle in one hand, which I think may be fertility symbol.

I forgot about this one, I don't know its use, only one hole...
I love the horse, and the detailed tiny feet of the man underneath :)

A beauty! Ivory doesn't like to be soaked...
At least, it doesn't have too much soil brown stains nor big cracks!
I feel a light microcristalline wax wipe should improve it :)

It is a symbol of longevity and strength. Which is what a father would wish for his child.:)

Sorry for the upset Dave, no rocking of boat intended:) I love hanging out here, and do tend to forget that this site is owned and financed by Peter - Thank-you Peter!

that is a chilling thought, I hope it never happens.

@Any Jewelry , maybe my grandmother was a former costumer of yours, she collected netsukes and was from the southern part of the netherlands. My mom inherited them, there's a cabinet full of them at my parental home, next time I am there I'll make pictures

You never know. I'd love to see the pictures. I don't remember every netsuke I sold, I only remember a gorgeous little longhaired dog, antique ivory, signed by Basui, a well-known maker. That was bought by a lady, maybe it was you grandmother. Maybe pictures will jog my memory on other netsuke.

Then Peter knows that what brings advertisers is traffic & that what brings traffic is the breadth & depth of the knowledge members offer the site for free & the sense of community they create. @Any Jewelry is one of his greatest assets in both areas; the site would be greatly diminished if she were to leave.

She is not proposing building walls, she is simply suggesting another sign post.

Then more new members come along and demand separate sections for for African and South American, Native American, Australian Aborigine, and Inuit items.
Coins, banknotes, medals. vintage cars, guns, the list is endless.
    The site would be diluted.

    Who would police it ?

Its not happening, so forget it.

I like AJ....she adds a lot to this site...in several ways.

But you're new here so please understand this.....

    We've had stronger members leave....
    More popular members die....

There's an ebb & flow to the community here , that has a life all it's own.
    Folks come & go......good folks...but none indispensable ..........

& when the Major Mod says knock it off...................Nuff Said !

    Thanks for the compliment Bronwen.
You're right, I am not proposing walls, but enrichment and easier access. Don't worry, I won't leave (Davey knows that;)), but still think it is a pity we don't have an Asian section.
But as Komo said, if the Mod says no, it is no. Davey has a lot on his plate as it is, I understand that, and I appreciate his hard work.
    Thanks, I like you too.:)

Most Asians are non-tribal, so most Asian art is non-tribal as well.

2017-04-14 00.35.55.jpg Some horribly bad pictures of my grandma's netsukes, will be there again with christmas, hopefully there will be some sort of daylight then, the darkest days... My dad told me that I am to inherit them (and also the porcelain) when he passes(hope that will be a long time from now)... 2017-04-14 00.35.27.jpg 2017-04-14 00.35.21.jpg 2017-04-14 00.36.17.jpg 2017-04-14 00.35.33.jpg
I love the owl, the rabbits and the monkeys but I did not see a longhaired dog in there...
There are more of them, next time I hope to do a better job at photographing them...;)

They are gorgeous, opoe. I love the people netsuke as well.
Don't recognize any, but I must confess, I don't remember every netsuke I ever sold. Old age, and all that...

Is that Royal Copenhagen's "lace" pattern?

that's possible, I can check that out next time...all the things in the cabinet belonged to my grandma and were never taken out...in the past I didn't dare, too scared to break something, I am most fond of the netsukes and the asian porcelain in there, the assumed royal copenhagen pieces feel a bit out of place to me but still nice.
