It does look like Scipioni. I have seen the other notation before too. I think of it as saying 'Ann', just to have something to call it, but doubt that's correct. I have a handful of photos of others with this mark. Maybe a dealer?

Yes, I was wondering if it was a dealer mark too. I have seen it on mulitple cameos that are very different in subject and quality. I looked for Scipioni, but didn't find any references.

Thanks for the link, however I get this:
    Antiques Board - Error
You do not have permission to view this page or perform this action.
Haha I meant my profile name to be floki not loki, so no wonder I am having so much trouble. Your right Loki is a trouble maker - floki on the other hand is a boat builder and a trickster.
There is no button to upload files, just 'post reply' and 'more options'. Clicking on the latter goes to 'add reply' which is what I was doing. There are lots of 'buttons' along the top of this reply, 'image' being the only obvious one, but it want the image url as I already mentioned.
Maybe you have an email I could send the pictures too?
    thanks for your patience :)

I don't know why you would not be allowed to follow the link to a general information thread in the forum, but it would seem you are not seeing a button for 'Upload a File' because you do not yet have sufficient privileges.
@daveydempsey can we get (f)loki sorted out?

If you haven't yet, you might see if you can start an introduction thread about yourself & whether you are allowed to upload photos there. Have you confirmed your e-mail address with the site?

I've tagged a moderator who will know why you are not being allowed to. Could take a little time before he is back on the site.

Is there no way I can send pictures to you Bronwen? Should I put my email on here so you can email me? rather than you put yours on here.

I get that you're itchy to be able to post your pix but I'm not really quite sure what your question is. You know the scene; you know the engraver; you know that it's not the only time Lamant did the scene. Was it the first time he sold a cameo with that scene? I know of no way to determine that. Let's see what Davey says about how you're set up as a member so we can get you established for full participation.

Hi, No messages received from Peter Davis, checked spam and recently deleted just in case. I thought you may be interested in the differences between the cameos of the same scene and also the date being on it. As every description I've seen has been circa 1850 and mine is 1848 -

    Hi All,

Here is another of my cameos that has writing on the back. This cameo is very small - 7/8" x 5/8". The carving is detailed and delicate. On the back are the initials "NN" and the numbers 0885/4 and 03, which are likely inventory or dealer marks. I am wondering if the NN are initials of the carver? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a loose sardonyx cameo of this noblewoman type that has a handful of sets of initials, most of them crossed out, 2 sets that are not. I interpret it as meaning the cameo was the production of a workshop where it passed into successively more skilled hands as it developed. I think it's probable NN is the final craftsman who made your cameo.

We will be interested in seeing your cameo, either in this thread or in a separate one you start, once you get your registration completed. Davey can help with technical stuff but has never demonstrated a great interest in cameos.

We know Lamant was active in Paris in the mid-19th century but don't have exact dates.

Thanks, Bronwen. It is one of my earliest acquisitions. I enjoy wearing it. I like the complexity and quality of the carving, even though it is very small.

Hi Bronwen, I just cant get my head round this forum, even with the info from Davey. I have spent quite a few hours trying to find how to post a new thread even, but no joy. I received the email and confirmed my account and checked out the links Davey sent. The only option left is to list the cameo on ebay and then you can see the pictures that way. Thank you all for trying to help, its much appreciated :)
