So as some of you may know I posted this awhile back, anyways I bought it for $10 today. They sold it as sterling so I guess it might've not tested as 18k? Although I am pretty sure it's still gold of some sort because sure doesn't look like sterling? Anyways here are some better pictures of it. The marking looks shoddy but for $10 who's complaining! I'll have to test it myself and see what's up! The cameo although worn is beautiful IMO very nice and quite big citrine stone.

Can you tell the difference between rhodium plated gold and rhodium plated silver by sight? You probably can't since the rhodium plating would look the same.

That looks like gold to me too. I'd have jumped on it and scuttled out the door as quickly as possible.

Well, not sure what happened because it is gold. Definitely not silver, didn't know they rhodium plated silver but it's not sterling that's for sure. As for the Belais marking I did find similar examples whereas the mark was like mine. I will be emailing an antique jeweler who deals with Belais if they think the marking is legit!

If this is indeed Belais I don't think it would be rhodium plated?, here is their alloy, "The formulation specified in Belais' patent resulted in an 18 karat white gold alloy composed of gold, zinc and nickel which thus avoided any problems with the platinum restrictions imposed by the war." I should be able to have the exact composition tomorrow

Virtually all commercial USA sterling jewelry has been rhodium plated since at least the late 1970's. Most nickle alloyed white gold has been rhodium plated for much longer.

I've never seen a cameo ring made of citrine before. It looks beautiful.

Great grab for 10 bucks! Had not heard of Belais before so of course did a bit of Googling. I can see no reason the mark would not be genuine.

Do you know how it was determined the citrine is genuine? I like the sharpness of the edges on the bottom but am bothered by the degree of scuffing on the top edges. Think a citrine would be more likely to accrue small chips rather than get scraped this way. When gold was not so pricey it was common for rings to be real gold with a glass stone. There are some other things you might call circumstantial that also raise doubts for me. Are you confident in the assessment of the stone?

Either way, beautiful ring & a really great deal.

For @colleenL, here's another citrine cameo.

Oh without a doubt genuine citrine. It was heat tested and rang up as citrine and I also had an estate jeweler look at it as well and said it was beautiful! Quite a jaw dropping piece in person I must say.

The stone is probably a heat treated amethyst and not a natural citrine,a natural rough citrine needed to cut a stone that size would be somewhat rare.

To put it mildly. But the trick of enhancing color seems to be an old one. Luigi Pichler, who cut this gem described as being 'golden quartz', died in in 1854.
