Is This a Regular Opal?

If I look at the top and see the pattern of flecks, and then turn it a bit, some of the flecks look more faded, some look brighter, and some just disappear. Is that what you mean?

ETA: I do have a gold testing kit so I'll give it a go.

 

I think so.
From different angles the colors fade or come to life.
I see my fire red , but looking from a different angle and the color seems to fade away.

I tested it - it's gold filled.

 

Oh, jumping back to AnyJewelry saying it might be a pinfire opal...I'll keep that term in mind.

 

Speaking about doublets and triplets reminded me of this pin I got a while ago. I had doubts it was even an opal because of the white backing, but it didn't look like any foiled art glass that I'd ever seen.

I think it's a triplet as there is white on the backing and what appear to be a clearish dome over the top of the opal.

Would this be a regular opal? Is the presence of the bottom and top non-opal parts automatically make it a lab-made opal?

ETA: The brooch does not test as silver.

 

It's a glass opal; I've seen others like it.

 

When I follow the link to the blue opals I see a huge variety. The one that looks most similar to me is a lovely pendant in silver metal..following the link it is "fashion Jewellery" so I'm very tempted to stay with the lab made Gilson but still very nice

 

No one can say when the "opal" was cut or when the piece was made.If it is man made opal then it's only a guess which company made it.

 

Yes this could very well be a triplet ,it is a great technique.
