Just bought this little marcasite brooch as a Christmas present for a friend. It measures just over 5cm long. I'm wondering what the marks mean... not easy to see and apologies for the poor photos! I might be able to take better ones tomorrow, in better light.

I can make out 'SILVER 986 t t x' inside one of the 'leaves'. On the 'stem', there looks to be a series of marks, including 925 (?) and date letter 'i', but it's fairly rubbed. Any thoughts? It was sold as vintage.

I suspect the 986 tt bit is a retailer's pattern mark. The rest looks like a British import hallmark.

I think the hand engraved bit is an insurance policy mark, or it would be in America. If you have a separate jewelry rider on your homeowner's insurance here as often as not you mark the jewelry and other bits are are covered.

Evelyb, I have never heard that!

I know there was a period when a number of rather paranoid folks engraved their social security numbers on everything (Ooops! Now, THAT was not a good idea!)
but I've never heard that it had anything to do with insurance.

I've even found silverplate that was marked by some overzealous person with a dremel. I've heard of using a Social, but that was before some idiot decided to use that as an ID number for other things than Social Security.
