What is this used for?

image.jpg I'm just curious to know what this might of been used for. My first thought was mail but it just seems to shallow. The space between the each shelf is to low to hold anything that I believe would fit in it, other than stacks of paper. Could it of been something to hold mail in? I know back in day, letters were more square and smaller than they are now.

Well it's obviously wall-mounted. But it doesn't look quite deep enough to hold letters. I could imagine them falling out.

Could it be for sorting wads of small documents? Like stacks of postcards or something like that?

It looks old, so I was wondering if it could hold mail back in the day, back when letters where smaller, more square like. Kinda like letters that I've come across during the mid to late 1800s.

That's a possibility, but surely something like that would be desk-mounted? Why would you have a wall-mounted one? And why of that shape? It looks so impractical.

I guess the desk mounted would be more practical for the families that had money to afford such things. I could see a common family that had to do with what they had, make something like this to use. The shape would give it just a decorative appeal.

My guess is it was situated behind a reception desk of a motel or hotel, / guest house or office rather than a home.

Would make sense with the different slots. I home wouldn't need that many.

Armando0831, what are the dimensions? How tall, how wide, depth of shelves (lower shelf appears to be deeper)?

I think it may have been for use in a kitchen or perhaps a long-shot maybe even in a bathroom.

    It's 15' tall, first shelf is3 1/2 deep, 2nd 4', 3rd is 4 3/4, 4th is 4, 5th is 3 1/2 and the 6th is 5' deep. It's 5 1/2 wide.

Thank you for the dimensions. It does contain only small(ish) spaces so I think I'll go with it being for a kitchen wall.

    Maybe it's a spice-rack?

Is it stained plywood? Workmanship screams "home-made." If you are going to sell it online auction, better start 99 cents.

Hate to say this, but I've seen similar made in Indonesia on sale over here.

Not hurting my feelings. I never planned on selling it. I was always stumped on what it may be used for. That's why it's been in my garage, collecting dust.

It's useful enough, could work well for bags of spices, rather than jars!

Oh, or brilliant for seed packets.

Just a WAG - Will CDs fit into it if they were laid flat without tipping back out? Might be recently made with older wood. Does the construction and wear indicate true age?

I'm assuming that your ' marks were meant to be " marks ... otherwise, if actually 15 feet tall, I would suggest it might be a very tall and unusually deep bookcase ;).

As I am in need of a spice rack at present, I am mentally filling it with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. And about thirty others. At least. I mean...I have five kinds of pepper...
