I have passed this photo up time and time again. Every time I see it I get the feeling that I've seen this face before. Today while making my routine trips through the local shops, I decided to take a closer look and do some research. The photographer is Underwood & Underwood from Washington DC. Other than making stereoviews, they specialized in news photography.

Here is some info about them -

Here's a couple of photos of Amelia Earhart with a similar hair style -

Here is a known picture of Amelia Earhart taken by Underwood & Underwood - http://www.npg.si.edu/exhibit/earhart/pop-ups/12.html

According to Wikipedia, Amelia Earhart was setting up a shuttle service between New York and Washington DC in 1929 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_Earhart

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. I could see it both ways, it's her or it's not her. Whoever it is, they made the news in Washington, DC. Thanks, Joe

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I personally don't think it looks that much like her, but that's just me. I don't mind if I'm proven incorrect, either... but here is my thinking

Normally Amelia Earhart wore her hair with some kind of bangs in the front. All of the photos you linked to seem to have some version of bangs. Also, her hair was a bit curly and didn't lie down flat as much as this woman's did. I also think her eyes look different.

Also, the woman in your photo has narrow shoulders... Amelia's look wider to me. She was very athletic looking.

Purdue University has a large archive about Amelia Earhart, since she was affiliated with that university. You might try writing to them for opinions:

I agree with Figtree. The nose and lips are not the same.

I agree with Fig, for all the same reasons she gave. Even if this were a "younger" Amelia than we normally see, it's not the same person.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I sent a email to Heritage Auctions to get their opinion. I guess an ID if not Amelia would be next to impossible. Here's another comparison photo. I think Amelia looks so athletic because she is typically wearing a thick aviation jacket
