Trying to identify American mirror possibly 3 generations old

Hi all,

I have a mirror that has been in my family for three generations or longer. It has an eagle on the top. It is not a Federal Gold Eagle convex mirror as they all
round and this one is not. I will try and put a picture in here. It is plaster with gold leaf.

Welcome Erika! I can not help with details about your mirror but I will say that I absolutely LOVE it!!!!!

Love your mirror. A lot of different styles became very popular with the Centennial held in Philadelphia in the 1870s. Most of the later ones all had 12 stars instead of 13. My Centennial one had a blackened flat mirror and looked like yours and painted with grey aluminum radiator paint. It took a while to remove the paint and leave the gilding. Then I replaced the flat mirror with a convex one. I found the right size in a catalogue of truck parts. I usually save the mirror but since mine was a 1950 replacement, I tossed it.

I love these!
I'm not sure if I still have a large one but think I have a very small convex one.

 

It is a Federal mirror with some age and quality. Need some close-ups and pics of the back to tell anything more.

 

It has a protective backing tacked on - looks like at a later date and I am afraid to remove it since it is so delicate and does have cracks.

 

Beautiful mirror -- I'm commenting just to send this to the top of the list, and maybe you will get some comments now that the back has been posted.

 

So mine has 13 stars which may mean that it is older than 1870? Could be - my family were packrats. I still have an almost perfectly preserved wedding dress that was my grandmother's grandmother's wedding dress, and I am 65! Your mirror is beautiful. I think it maybe newer than the 1870s It looks more like the 1880s to 1915s. There was a large revival of Federal style then. It looks like the maker took a little more care than the later 1940s revival.
