I can hardly resist hand made glass. It is very difficult for me to put it down after I discover the pontil scar. This jar with a pewter lid in the shape of a snail captured me, so I had to bring it back and find out about it. Well that didn't go very far. Nothing. I must be using the wrong search terms. The lid fits well, so I think it is correct. It is 10 inches tall and 4 inches square on the bottom with a large round lip at the top. The jar lists to one side - it might be due to having to carry the weight of that lid for several years. The color is quite pretty - a pale bluish green. Does anybody recognize this?

Maybe it's for keeping snails in. :)

Wow. How did you spot that!!!! I checked another picture and it's there too. The pontil scar wasn't polished, so I didn't look there. I'll take some more closeups of the area.

Couldn't find it. It looks like just a variation in the glass. Thanks for trying.

Hm. I'd surmise French, sold with something food related as the contents.

Interesting. Something that a person kept after it was finished to reuse it. That accounts for the unpolished Pontil scar. Thank you.

French food companies seem to do this a great deal.

Both! :) I approve. It used to be far more prevalent in the UK, too.

Thank you. The lid shows some age but maybe only because of its poor metallurgy.

For the record, glass cooled below 900ºf behaves as a solid, it will break before it bends. Or slumps.

Thank you! It's a common misconception! There is also a story about old window glass panes being thicker at the bottom due to slumping from the sun's heat all those years.

I was just joking. Part of it's appeal to me is it's lopsided shape. Imperfections like this suggest older hand work to me. This thing has bubbles, is slightly twisted; has an jagged pontil scar, etc. It is also very heavy. I don't know if this thought process is correct. This is why I ask questions, so I can learn what to look for.
