when is 14k not gold

if a ring is marked 14k its gold i thought,i have a mid 1970s ring coming back,claiming its not gold. TIA.......

Welcome to the group. My first thought would be to invest in a gold testing kit and learn how to use it. The type of kit that only requires a small rubbing. There is a lot of deception in newer pieces from Asia but a vintage piece like that being mismarked would be surprising to me.

 

Agree, good investment. Remember, never put the acid straight on the gold, always use a testing stone, most kits include that.

No, unfortunately there are tons of fakes, most look fake and others don't. My ex-girlfriend once bought me a huge gold ring stamped 14k, it was so obviously fake, it was sad. Most of the fake 14k marks don't look real either but that's not always the case. I hope things work out for you TIA.

Just make sure the ring you sent is the one you get back !!!!
Then show it to us.......& if you're going to sell gold.....ya...get the kit !!

that looks like an honest mark....but the gold looks ...dull..!

 

i have had 3 returns over the years,i dont mine ,but when they tell me its not gold/not solid gold,,,,that just makes me go berserk.,.,ha,.,,anyway return completed,i just sent a message to buyer asking how they they made the conclusion,.,.,.tomorrow for my own sanity,i'm going to my local jeweler.,.,.......thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!.....by the way,i tried to post a photo here but gave up.....good work komo

 

i have never given a neg to anyone,but i might end up reporting this buyer,not sure what that accomplishes,,,....,.,.,.,,but its really not my bag

 

Use the "Upload a File" button when posting a photo, and edit to make sure it's not too large. (I notice you mentioned having problems with loading photos.)
