I don't remember much of the Bicentennial but did hear stories about Pearl Harbor day from my dad. He was just a kid at the time, but it's one of those things you don't forget. It is important to pass stories on, if for no other reason than you never know which bit of information will be important later on.

I didn't hit any Picassos today, but did score a sterling brooch for three bucks, among other things.

During high school, our English teacher gave us an important assignment. At the time, it didn't seem important but, as I've since learned, it was was one of the most important assignments (IMHO) I was given.
Interview Your Elderly Relatives. I interviewed my Great Aunts, Great Uncle and Grandmother. Thanks to a school teacher, I learned so many interesting facts about my family's history.
Thank You for sharing your memories.

You're welcome. I wish I'd had some local elderly relatives left by then to intervew. My mom's uncle would have been the right age, but he was hours away by car and pretty deaf. You were lucky.

Yes, I was lucky. Also, I feel fortunate to have had an opportunity to get to know them on an entirely different level. For example, my Great Aunt, Claudia, had been married and had a child. Unfortunately, the baby was stillborn. Her husband was Perry Ellis! The famous designer? I do not know. Doubtful.
I asked her if she remembered the name of her grandmother and, without missing a beat, she replied, I sure do : Cassie Matilda Sturges. Genealogical research has been a hobby for years and, suddenly, I had the name of my Great Great Grandmother. These are not examples of monetary treasure, such as gold, silver or Van Gogh paintings ; Nevertheless, I will value them for the rest of my life.
Every school teacher should give this assignment to their students. Not only does it bridge generational gaps, the assignment allows one to record family facts and, in many cases, start a family tree.
    Kind Regards.
