I found this last week thrift store hunting; it is pencil signed Dan Miller but the signature - or really the matting - is unusual because it looks like a cut out autograph.
Has anyone seen a framing like this?
Can anyone tell me the name of this piece + I see he does a lot of engravings that look like prints to me; how can I tell if this is one? (The back is loose & I can take it off if that will help?)
    Thank you for any help.

Could be this Don Miller and, if so, a worthwhile find.

Etsy work is a multiple. Which yours doesn't appear to be. Yours does appear to have some discoloration and buckling. Not a bad idea to remove from frame.

The framer made the cutout in the mat so that the pencil signature would be visible. Not an uncommon technique. It looks like the artwork has shifted in the frame, and there is mat burn visible along the lower edge (probably around the whole image) from poor quality materials. Worth having reframed with archival quality materials.

Rather than mat burn, 2manycats (personal communication) suggests that the darker color around the lower edge was the actual original color of the print, and that the rest has been substantially faded.

Why do you think it's a print?

The credit line on the bottom makes it clear, but I was going on the two signatures. The upper one appears to have been signed in the original printing medium (possibly a litho stone), and the pencil signature added by the artist after the print was pulled.
