I've just purchased this lovely drawing/engraving, but can't make out the signatures. Would love to know more about its origin. All I know is what I was told by the grandson of the man it used to belong to - an eclectic collector from Newark Notts. According to the grandson it was in a box with paintings from the New York area with would make sense since this is the only thing I can make out from the back. The other paintings in the box were also dated between 1890-1920. Please help if you can, any information or clue would be great!

might be showing 4 nationalities of immigrants playing a game like klaverjassen (Dutch) Klammern (German), and Belote (French) which are - except very small differences - the same cardgame.

I found Ferdinand Michl listed elsewhere as the artist also.

Yes that's it! Either way it was a steal since I payed £40 for it but will hang proudly on my wall knowing bit more about the background and the artist. Thank you all so much, I can see the "Michl" in the corner now that I know. And that's an interesting thought @Fid !

It's a beautiful piece...and the dog on the left scratching his head looks exactly like our dog!

funnily Michl was Austrian, although from Prague. so it could be an allusion to the different parts of the Kack Empire that was on the brink of going to shreds; especially the Czechs felt disadvantaged by Vienna. in the first WW they had to put the different national regiments into separated barracks because there were too many brawls.
