Hi I picked this piggy bank up at a estate sale and was wanting to see what you all thought about it. It looks like Native American markings but what do I know, or is it folk art. It is 5 1/2 inch long and 10 1-2 inch around. It has a greenish brownish color on top and more of black on the bottom, I think that is glaze runs on the bottom. And I really can't tell if it's stoneware or pottery? There is white paint on the bottom I don't know if that could have been a signature at one time? It looks old to me. What you all think? TIA and Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Think it might be from further south.

Johnny's right...it's Mexican blackware, from Oaxaca.

It's burnished, not glazed, so the discoloration on the bottom is from the firing, not from glaze running. It's a little hard to tell what happened, but my guess is there was either something touching the pig in those places while it was fired, or whoever touched the pig last had something strange on their fingers that affected the way the clay fired.

The bank is contemporary, made in the last 10-15 years or so. That's about when this particular style of decoration first seemed to appear on the market.
