I've had this a few years - I think I got it at an estate sale. It is a carving of 2 lions fighting over the head of a ox/steer one of them had killed.
It is really something - I didn't believe it was real wood or made from one piece, but looking at it closely with a magnifying glass shows that it is!
It measures 17" tall x 13" wide at base and it is VERY heavy.
    The wood has been stained.
There is no artist signature anywhere on it.
    Any idea where it's from?
    It's age?
    Value?
Any information/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Ooops! Please note the time was 5:30am - I was still on 1st cup of coffee, was thinking of putting it on eBay - and completely forgot I'd asked about this before!
    Sorry

Looked at original posting & see no one mentioned something that stands out to my eye: the bovine head is not that of a European domestic cow. Something more like a cape buffalo. African in origin, perhaps?

You're right, but wouldn't African lions fight over an African kill anyway?
If they bother to fight over a kill at all, I thought hunting was a family thing for lions. Mostly done by the females anyway, while the males laze in the shade.
I don't know if it is Black Forest, as was suggested in the other thread, but Europeans and others did carve and cast African scenes, and would have known African animals from zoos and pictures.

Think you're confusing art with National Geographic. Certainly does have a Black Forest-y feel to it, although almost expect the Germans to be more true to life in their portrayal. Just puts me in mind of this sort of thing from Zimbabwe:

IMG_5677.jpg It doesn't feel at all African to me but a Google Images of "Cape buffalo carving" produces quite a few results that might lead somewhere. Battling to upload any others :)

That is almost definitely a cape buffalo I think - just by the horns laying on the head?
