    These are two statues of the same Taoist deity, Shouxing, he stands for longevity. Someone mounted them together on one base.
    Don't know about the wood, palmwood maybe? The eyes are inlaid with glass.

    I'm going with boxwood. If you do a search for boxwood netsuke or ojime you will see it can be stained various shades, often just like this. Most of what will be in the results are modern Chinese knockoffs of Japanese designs, but they show the look of the wood well.

    how old would they be? they are old because of the eyes? and quality of carving?

    I think 30s-50s. By the 60s they started to give these a 'rosewood' finish, they still had inlaid glass eyes though.
    I like the carving, it is not as detailed as some, but that looks intentional, stylized, and the folds have a nice flow.
