Hello all - this was an impulse buy on ebay a few days ago after staying up too late reading antiquers.com posts :)

Couple of questions - is this moonstone? The "stone" is flat on the front...well...not perfectly flat but flat enough to call it flat. I think it's moonstone but not sure. Second question - is this a mexican silver/maker's mark - does it ID the studio/maker/age? Thanks again! The front of the ring is about 3/4 inch long on the long side.

Know nothing about gem stones but Mexican jewelry much more likely to feature opals than moonstones.

Yes it is a Mexican sterling mark. The stylized Eagle has the number 2 on his chest.

With the layered look,it appears to be abalone.

It is mother of pearl & Hollyblue is probably correct that it is from an abalone shell.

About this, you would have to ask Pearl. To me, nacre from any source, abalone included, falls into the general category of mother of pearl. Since I am not 100% certain about abalone, MOP is the most I can assert. :writer::turtle:

    From Wiki:
The main commercial sources of mother of pearl have been the pearl oyster, freshwater pearl mussels, and to a lesser extent the abalone

Definitely abalone, Southern Californian and Mexican white abalone does not have the vivid colours an abalone species like New Zealand paua has.
