Any and all help towards identifying this old chair would be greatly appreciated.

I purchased this chair at an auction many years ago. I would think it is European as most, but not all, were European furniture items.

Joints are mortise and tenon with wood dowels and the cushion is comprised of either hair or straw(I have not physically verified this and am solely basing my assumption on feel). 20th century Spanish renaissance revival. In a style often seen in colonial pieces but could actually be Spanish in origin. Maybe as early as 1900 or as late as the 30s.

Nice chair... has a earlier looking finish then ones sees out there. How common are examples with old world joining Technics compared to the more often seen modern joining (no pegs).

I have a upholstered Jacobean/Flemish style walnut armchair, also having pegged joints, hand carved arms. I'm assuming it's European, ca. 1900.

Thanks. It is a stretch to even say I am an inexperienced, in knowledgeable novice. I really have no clue what I am looking at except what I can glean from google. I have seen some chairs with SOME similar characteristics on the www from Italy and Spain but most were of significant age(ca1500-1600). We just like the chair as it has character and wanted to see if f we could learn anything about it.

It’s not in great shape but it is a definite conversation piece.

Any idea on what function a small chair like this would have? Except for the obvious of placing one’s buttocks on to rest the old feet. Lol

Could you please give the "from the floor" height(s) of the legs and to the "top" of the seat cushion? Sometimes "small" furniture (especially "side" chairs) can indicate a time when people (perhaps especially women) were (generally) shorter in height? ;)

I have several antique dining chairs that are only 17 inches floor to seat surface. Obviously shorter than the ones made today, but your chair seems about right to me.

    Hi,
When I had my hip done I was told NOT to sit on anything less than my knee. It seems from the floor to my knee is 17". I can sit on 99% of chairs but forget about sofas. I think most chairs made after 1900 are at least 17".
