We are getting ready to pass this along to our son for Christmas. Belonged to his grandfather, USAAC, USAF, served after the War in Japan, several bases.

It is a cigarette box. Rounded on both side of the tray. Inside the lid it says "Kagetu Hotel". There is such a place...maybe...but most links now say Kagetsu.
    4-1/2" X 3-5/8" X 1-3/4".
    No lid catch, never was.
Red enameled inlay showing Camels (thought, maybe Camel Cigarettes, but no).

Has a mark on the bottom above "Made in Japan" (no "occupied").

I have followed the guide on photos, tried two different browsers, 142KB size, zero %, an error occurred.
I can post photos, but not sure what I am doing wrong.
Tried the "upload a file" at bottom and also "image" at top.

I was able to load one onto a friend's photo hosting site. Take a while to do it this way, but I can.

I had read the first one (on a PC) before I posted. Never got to the loaded part. Hit upload, went to 0% and "an error has occurred" and that was that.

    Thanks.
As a joke, I'm thinking of loading it with candy cigarettes before we wrap it!

I suppose the next query is the mark on the underside. I have spent hours searching, and it's always porcelain or British.
    Any links to japanese markings?
    Thanks!

Any better forums here I should mention this item to get some ideas?
Not gonna sell it, want some data, printed, to give to my son with the piece for Christmas.

I find all sorts of stuff on line, silver plate Japanese cigarette box, some fairly close as far as details around the lid edge, but nothing with that red enamelled insert with Camels, and what looks like Egyptian motifs engraved or embossed around the borders of the lid.

    Thanks

    No..
if u were to start posting the same item in different Forums.....it would be quickly frowned upon.

    BUT......

if @Bookahtoo or @daveydempsey , would see fit to move this thread to the Metal Forum...........is a suggestion that may or may not get new eyes on the item...

And it is! We have passed along many things.
Funny...one would think that the effort expended to manufacture this item, especially with the name inside the lid, one would have shown up before now.
He was on 3 or 4 bases, 1947-1954 or so, which dates this to the latter part as it does not have "Occupied Japan" on it.

One item is a badge from a reunion from his group that flew the Hump during hostilities. Too a bit of work to wrangle that information, but he knows what it is, where it came from, why his grandfather had it.

I have a couple of pieces from my side of the family that say Occupied. One is a small camera lighter on a tripod. Played with it at Great Grandparent's house as a kid.

I thought the mark cast into the bottom above the "Made in Japan" might give me a clue as to origin or manufacturer, but so far I have found nothing that shows marks like that listed.

I'll leave my Dolphins to the kids, one set each.

BTW, thanks for moving this. I was unsure, as it seemed most I read about was brass here.
