Thank you, s_i_s. Marion Davies was born in 1897, though. So too young, unless UW was wildly incorrect about when the photo studio was in business. Also, from my view she does not resemble the woman in my photo closely enough. The lips on the actress in my photo are a lot thinner, and the eyes don't look as rounded (and I've looked at other photos of Davies besides the one in the image).

So I spent yesterday evening searching on my phone while watching the TV (multitasking!) and the only thing I found was a cdv of Maggie Mitchell (actress and lover of John Wilkes Booth):

It was the necklace (rather than the person) that caught my eye and made me think this could be a costume for a role played by your lady too? Unfortunately.... I can't identify the role!

Another thought is she may not have been a movie actress, but a stage performer, maybe even an opera singer? Was Mecca exclusively a movie studio? (I know nothing about them!).

I think if we identify the costume she's wearing (assuming it IS a costume), there's a better chance of finding out who she is :)

Bev aka thelmasstuff Colored pencil artist extraordinaire ;)

I still think the first name is Catherine. Maybe it's a local actress and not one who became famous. I also thought Evangeline.

Thank you! Mecca was a photography studio. They took this photo. I was already thinking that she was a theatrical actress rather than a movie actress. Could have been either, but plays and stage performances were more prevalent than movies at the time.

It's quite possible that she will remain unidentified!

Is it just my eyes? Seems to me that the writing on the front is meant to copy the back but got the last name wrong. In the pencil version, isn't there another letter between the u & the d? Not Douders, as on front, but Dou?ders? Here's the front for comparison:

She would also not wear a crucifix. The only figure I can think of who had a dramatic life in which Catholicism was central is Mary I of England, Henry VIII's first daughter.

I am finding some people with the surname Pounders & can see the possibility that the D is really a P. In Germany the name Doumler is a going concern, but not Doumlers.

I also think there's more promise in seeing it as k rather then h.

Thanks, @Aquitaine -- yes, that site is at the University of Washington Library, who were trying to help me with it back in 2016.

Thanks for thinking of other options! Yes, I think that ignoring what is written in the front is the way to go at this point. And I hadn't thought of the letter P as a possibility. Thanks again!

I'm currently on a genealogical research trip, and the photo research will have to wait until I get back next week.

    Of course! *doh*

I'm still doing searches on this. I firmly believe that persistence always pays off!
