African blade?

Discussion in 'Antique Discussion' started by AlienArtifactZ, Nov 6, 2017.

  1. Picked this up for like 15 bucks. Its very strong and sharply pointed with a full tang blade. Almost seems like the handle and everything is made from one solid piece. Any thoughts on design and origin? IMAG0712.jpg IMAG0710.jpg

Just to be sure, is the sheath wood or leather? Could we see details of the decorations?

upload_2017-11-6_13-18-8.jpeg The offset handle is more likely south American ...

I'm finding Brazil to be the likely origin....

Yes, the decoration is very much like Tuareg.
With the close ties between North Africa and the Iberian peninsula, North African styles could have traveled to Latin America as well.
The most famous Tuareg city, Timbuktu, was founded by Moorish refugees from Spain.

Not the best example, but I never photographed the rest. Must do that soon.:writer::snaphappy:

To a knifemaker or user, the offset blade versus the centered blade is a major distinguishing detail, regardless of similarities in handle appearance.
Ethnicities who usually use one design in this respect would never switch to the other.
This looks like a number of South American styles I've seen, all having offset blades; the gaucho knife of Argentina uses that design also, though dissimilar in some other respects.

Yes, South American. Either gaucho or gaúcho (Argentina/Uruguay or Brazil)
Although the hilt shape is of (Iberian) Moorish origin, the decoration is not.
As I said, it was best to wait for detailed pictures.
Never say never.;) It depends on how a blade is used, for instance knife or dagger. In the case of a dagger, the size and mode of attack of the animal one had to ward off, etc.

    Tuareg centred dagger, 'telek':
