Found this thrifting this morning, I’m thinking 1920’s, Italian. What to you think? It measures about 15” tall and 12” wide. It’s missing a copper edge and one tile in the upper right.

I think it was Louis B.'s art class assignment. I remember doing something similar in school.

Yeah, could be 1950s. Certainly not the quality I'd expect from a professionally done piece.

Boy, I have to disagree that this was a student work. Just my opinion. I think it is well done. This would sell in a NY minute where I live.

What about California? I was even wondering 1940s?

    It's cool!

Yeah maybe a bit later, California is a good thought, Spanish was my second guess. I was going by the tiles used thinking they compared to Italian mosaics I’ve seen. It weighs a ton, the conglomerate concrete backer and the patina on the copper edge looks older to me.

    Anpother vote for 1950s
She bears an uncanny resemblance to Dutch actress Adelheid Roosen in her younger years. Maybe she would be interested.

The work is too good for student IMO, though the world is full of exceptional students. I’m feeling something promotional? I also think the work on the body/face is much nicer than the hat, which makes me think it’s a preexisting image which someone drew a hat onto and then realised it in mosaic, meaning that there were no photo-realistic subtleties to copy. It almost looks like the spherical halo you see on saints!
