I found this at an estate sale years ago but have never been able to identify it so I put it away. I recently pulled it out and thought I would try again. 20201106_125105_HDR.jpg 20201106_125050.jpg 20201106_125044_HDR.jpg 20201106_112127 (2).jpg

Long shot but is it similar to this backstamp for IPC the International Pottery Co-Trenton?

No, quite different now I look at them together.

It could be German, but we need someone more knowledgeable, like @say_it_slowly :)

I'm afraid I don't know but I did look a bit without success. When I look at it I can't help but think it's a Chinese decorative bowl so I'd guess it could be an importer's mark or the like. I could be completely wrong though. I just can't get past thinking that's what it is.

Thank you all for taking the time to help. It is very much appreciated. The mystery continues, but I will definitely look into the things you have suggested. Thanks again!

The answer is about 3/4 ways down this query. It's one of those Trenton potteries which are not all the well researched. Usually when I seen semi-vitreous I look at American companies first. I was able to verify the mark ID in Lehner's.

"According to Debolt's Dictionary of American Pottery Marks, by Gerald DeBolt (published 1994), the IPC (with a small o to the right of the C)is indicative of the International Pottery Co. It is IPCo inside the Maltese Cross. The mark you describe is similar to one I have on a chamber pot and is circa 1890s."

I'm wondering if you identified the mark like KSW found rather than the one on the bowl. They look different to my eye.

Yes, you are correct. I had thought the IP Co. mark was a clearer version of the OP's mark. There was a simpler version of the IP Co. mark that might be closer to the OP's mark but I have to admit I was rather troubled that the OP's piece didn't look much like the American vitreous ware I am familiar with.

With all your help I have been googling myself silly and found my same bowl. @say_it_slowly you must be correct that it is an importer mark because this bowl has a different marking on the bottom. The listing dates the bowl to the 1950's and Asian, but no other indications are given. I am going to write to the seller. Maybe she has more specific information as to how she dated it and can narrow in on origin. https://www.chairish.com/product/22...an-porcelain-octagon-blue-and-white-serveware
This is the mark on the bottom of hers

That sure does look like the same mark! Good searching! Too bad it doesn't come with more info though isn't it. Maybe someone will recognize it with the additional mark to work from.

OH WOW! I didn't see it until you turned mine, but you are right. They do look the same. Mine just isn't as defined. Thanks for pointing that out!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Come back to update this if you hear from the seller of the other one.

@Figtree3 I did hear back but she said she couldn't help me and that she sometimes spends hours researching an item (ME TOO ... hours turn into years sometimes ... LOL).... So, it is still a mystery. I don't know how she determined the date and if she narrowed it down to that, I am not sure why she couldn't be more specific (at least on her listing) for location (she just said "Asian"). I haven't given up and will definitely come back and update if I get any information. I am new to this forum, but I have really enjoyed going through some of the posts. You all know so much more than I do! Hopefully someday I will be able to contribute!
