I bought this actually not so little guy.
Poor thing was just tossed on top of a few tables, turned around facing the wall in a damp dark corner.
"Come to me, I will find you a good home," I told it..

    Hes heavy, like surprisingly heavy.

    The drawer has been reconstructed.
No dovetails upfront, but in the back.
Nails along the face of the drawer and 2 newer slats along the bottom.

    Wood pegged together..

Can anyone tell me about how old he is or where he might be from?
He came from the same house as the step back cupboard I recently posted, an old(er) wooden pegged table, and a rather old blanket chest (Ill be posting in a minute).

Federal period work table. Probably second quarter of 19th century. Unusual that the front of the drawer is not dovetailed. Makes me wonder if it has been modified, though it looks right otherwise. Pulls are definitely not original. Looks like poplar, though could be walnut or some other wood. Hard to tell since finish has been messed with. Those drip makes make me think it may have been stripped with lye at some point. More of a country piece and may have even been originally painted.

I couldnt figure out why the front of the drawer was that way either..

I was reading that Kentucky is known to have "thick bodied" furniture.
Im wondering if this piece couldnt be from there?

Ive debated stripping it down and returning the wood to natural. Its got almost a green hue to it that I dont fancy too much.
Not that this is $500 piece or anything.. but Im not sure if I need to leave be

I'd be tempted to polish it up and leave bad enough alone, but if that's the second or third finish on there you probably can't hurt things any.

That is a sign of poplar. Stripping and refinishing will eliminate some of it but probably not all. Poplar was often used on pieces to be painted for this reason.

I like it. I have a similar table that was pretty rough so I used some Kramer’s Best products on it (outside). I’m curious to see if any of the pros here recommend Kramer’s.

Sheraton single drawer stand, 1830-1850. The finish is gone, it needs a new one, TODAY! lol
