I purchased 2 MCM Harlequin prints and 2 other framed MCM paintings? prints? signed TANA for $4 at an auction recently. On back of the TANA painting it has Frame Finished in 1964 by Joseph Sigler. I removed one from the fame and it feels like paint. They are on Cadet Artist Board. Question #1 is there a term for this style? #2 Do the names Joseph Sigler or TANA ring any bells? TIA, Carl

They look like paintings to me. As to style it is kind of hard to pin down ...... They are stylized decorative portraits and your MCM dating is right on. Modernist kitsch?

As to artist, they may be production paintings and Tana may not really exist. This would be much in the vein of the Vanguard Studios works. On the other hand, it might have been an individual emulating a style popular at the time. They almost have a paint by number like quality to them though obviously not PBN unless the artist really deviated from the proscribed lines. I wonder if they might have been some other kind of painting exercise based on a model work. Lastly, I don't think the framing notation has anything to do with the artwork.

Thanks for your response Brad. I like the term Modernist Kitsch. Not sure if they are production paintings. I had thought they might be but the signature is not quite the same on both. I would think production painting the signature would be exact? Would just described them as Asian ladies? Definitely not PBN. Paint doesn't have the thickness I associate with PBN.
