    @Figtree3 I have done further research and I believe the images below (apart from the one of two pics) are daguerreorypes. They are positive images under glass that I need to tilt to see the image. When they are flat on the bench I can see myself - a bit like a mirror. I think the image of the two together are ambrotypes. The one of the man I think is definitely an ambrotype because the glass on the back has been blacked out and the one of the woman and child (I can't see the back) doesn't appear to be reflective like the dags.
    How did I go :watching::watching::watching: 20201105_172608.jpg

    I have just come across this image (with all names on a separate sheet of paper) of my ancestors on my Grandmothers side. I think this is really wonderful. I also have found an old family tree so I can start to piece all of this together. In the front row are my Grandmother's Grandmother and Grandad and in the second row are my Grandmother's Mum and Dad. 20201105_174636.jpg

    All correct!

    In addition to the mirror-like quality of daguerreotypes, as the image surface is silver you sometimes see tarnishing, often proceeding in from the edges as on the second and fourth daguerreotypes you posted.

    With ambrotypes, they sometimes show a sort of 3-D appearance when the image was made on the front of a piece of clear glass, with a black paper or paint on the back. In dark areas of the image you can almost see through the glass to the backing, giving it an appearance of depth.

    Your daguerreotypes are in very nice condition. Often they are almost completely obscured by tarnish, and dirt under the glass. You might be interested in other posts here about daguerreotypes that have been restored. You can search this forum for "daguerreotype" or "dag" to find them. Just be careful never to touch the image surface, and never, ever, use any kind of silver cleaning product.

    Oh - and your family photo is priceless! Such a dapper lot.
