Bulldogs, I think it is "brocade" (fabric), but wait for others to chime in. In the meantime . . .

    Merriam-Webster dictionary's definition(s) of "brocade" --

    "Definition of brocade
1 :a rich silk fabric with raised patterns in gold and silver
2 :a fabric characterized by raised designs" (emphasis/bolding added by me)

It reminds me of the cases used by Jewelers. My grandmother had something similar that held her pearls.

I agree it is a brocade fabric, probably silk. I can only guess what the case was designed for, but because of the 1 1/4" depth possibly scarves, silk stockings or hankies (although hanky holders/boxes were usually square).

Hmmm, just a wild-eyed "I wonder if" but . . . do you and any others think perhaps it was a gift to a lady whose name was "Florence" . . . and the gift-giver(s) perhaps had her name embossed on it to make it even more special? ;)

It isn't this, but it reminds me of the hilarious things people buy to fold t-shirts.

Can you post a closeup of the snap? I found something with that date on it when I was metal detecting…

This thread will be four years old in two days. Lol.
I will look around for it. I know it's here somewhere.
