Rock Crystal & gold pendant

I picked this up as it looked promising. It tests as quartz and I presume rock Crystal is a fancy name for clear quartz? Possibly a very slight lemon tinge but that may be the artificial light and the dirt I can see on it now I’ve photographed it!
Does the style of faceting tell me anything about it? Or the setting?
The setting tests as 10-14k but no hallmark?
What have I got here please? Modern and only scrap value or something with more to it?

Put that poor puppy in a small bowl with warm water and a small squirt of mild dish soap. Soak for about 15 minutes and clean with a sift tooth brush. If it doesn't come clean take it to a jeweler you trust and ask them if they will clean it.

I’ll do that! I’ve looked on Google as to if I can find comparable but there are so many variables to look through- is this likely very new modern or a few years old modern? Is the faceting modern? So many questions sorry!

 

I'd vinegar it. Pale citrine maybe, and too nice for scrap.

 

Anxious to see it AFTER its bath!!!!! Sure LOOKS like there's writing on it...which I wouldn't think would make sense either...........down near the point...FIRST photo.....

Maybe jargoon? Jargoon is a type of zircon, often slightly yellowish, with a hardness of 7.5. It was used a lot in the 18th and 19th century, but hardly ever after that.

Could the setting and faceting be that old?
Just realised I need to do serious homework on faceting styles and settings through the ages as I really wouldn’t know if it was made yesterday or 100 years ago
Not heard of Jargoon. I was trying to decide if it’s an optical illusion that it’s slightly yellow but the photos seem to accentuate it.

 

Depends on how old you mean. There is some wear to the back, and the stone looks like it has an open culet, which means age.
@stracci , what do you think of the age of the stone?

You mentioned 18th and 19thC so that’s why I was after clarification.

 

That was about the popularity of jargoon. It wasn't used much after that, but that doesn't mean it wasn't used at all.
Nice and clear cut, right?

 

Looks like the culet was chipped off,need in focus photo.Age of the stone is in millions of years.

 

@KSW , how big is this piece?
First of all, I'm noticing that squarish bit of metal on the back. Something was removed here. It looks like this was once part of something else, and it was reworked into a pendant. The bail at the top was almost certainly added later. Perhaps it was an earring? Maybe like these ones below.

I can also tell that the prongs are not tight, a sign that the stone was removed before soldering the bail and removal of the earring back.
So about the stone. Rock crystal/quartz is a pretty good guess.
The cut is kind of basic, and probably of the period.
The setting is certainly not new, but it's hard to be sure. Anywhere from 1900-1930's....maybe earlier?
I can't wait to see the clean version!

 

What she said. I don't think it's horribly old. I've seen "old" style stones come out of India to this day. The cut doesn't always mean much.

 

I wait till the marks are known. at the moment I see alpine crystal with too much greyish inclusions (granite etc. or remnants when pried out). guess would be tourist stuff from the Dolomites.
