I believe the material is porcelain(?).

    Thank you!

Looks like glass to me, opaque white over blue, and she also reminds me of the Statue of Liberty but that may just be the headdress.

    Thanks, AF!

She does look a bit like Lady Liberty, similar to the portrait head found on old U.S. coins. Any thoughts on the possible age & origin? 18th C.(?)

    Hi,
What kind of size are we talking here, 1" or 3'? Looks like glass to me and looks like it might have been made to be in a paper weight? I only say that since I have a classic Minvera in white on a purple background in a Baccarat paperweight.

    Hi Greg and thank you!

    The size is: 1-5/8 inches.

If forced, I'd guess a late 19th C. brooch that has lost its mount, or never got one.

That seems like a reasonable guess to me.

I see loads of loose cameos now, it's very sad! When gold prices started climbing everyone was scrapping the gold and leaving some lovely, well carved cameos without a home :-(

    This is, sadly, very true.

Very sad. The setting are often as nice or nicer than what they hold.

And they sometimes have greater value than scrap value. Scrap value doesn't take into account artistry, the maker or how desired the design is! Very often that can be greater than just the value of the gold.

Marie, I always thought the loose cameos could be reworked by someone who does the gold-filled wiring settings. When I go to craft shows, they always have the plastic cameos in this lovely wire work! If I did that kind of work, I'd contact a scrapper and buy the loose cameos.

I have always wanted an antique cameo but never got around to buying one when I had the $$$$.......only found the cheapos in my travels.:(.

Speaking of the cameo being worth more than the gold, I just had an auction end for a Victorian set that only had gold mounts and wires, no frame.
The value was in the carving and the fact it was a set.

Thanks Shiloh, actually I expected it to go higher but that's the nature of the game. I was happy with the result and someone got a great deal on an unusual set, so it's a win-win. Not much gold in that set but the value is in the carving.

It is beautiful, Calico -- And part of the value may be in the age!
