    Any thoughts?

Just speculation on my part but . . . I think it looks like a confederate soldier (he isn't dressed in "Union" blue). The only "blue" depicted is a wide band around his cap. Perhaps that was the soldier's "nod" to "The Bonnie Blue Flag." ;)

I see more blue/green in his tunic, not much gray though. :)
    His cap throws me off.

I won’t give you Southern Comfort for that! I’ll fight you and your brothers!
But not if you’re civil about it.
    ;) :)

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Although no wounds showing, he LOOKS wounded......has NO grip on that sword....

Looks like a feedbag under the bridle too, and can't see a rifle in the scabbard..... maybe opposing army got soft, slapped the pony on the rump and said "git!!!"

Towards the end of the civil war, most confederate soldiers were wearing homespun wich was a brownish color.I think this is a very nice piece, very well done.

I am of the mind he is Confederate as well. I think the artist has done a good job of portraying a horse running on his last legs as well as a wounded soldier. I like it too!

So, not a bad piece I guess but isn't it strange that there is no signature?
Seems like there are a lot of painters in the Wyeth family but none has the WS initials.

The marking on the back appears to be made with marker. Is that correct? And, if so, written fairly recently.

    lloyd249 it's not hoarding if it's valuable

love that frame also , i was watching a show the other day where the frame was made by a famous maker and the painting was unknown artist and not worth much , the frame was worth upwards of 60 thousand

Correct, looks like a marker. Could be an inventory number or so.

My take: Confederate cavalry soldier, mortally wounded, dropping his sword... Horse is at a dead gallop (all 4 feet off the ground) & soldier will be falling off soon.

I don't think it's a period piece. The canvas doesn't look right for that time period.

Aquitaine, where do you see a feed bag?

    Ditto on SBVC's take.

I've heard of N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and Jaimie Wyeth, but not W.S. Wyeth and could find nothing on the internet.

Definitely a sad visual commentary on the Confederate loss. However, the craquelure makes the canvas look older than the painting style itself, but the back of the canvas looks fresh. My guess is the frame is a lot older than the painting.
