I bought this chair this weekend and there are things that don't seem quite right with it. Can anyone help me out? I was trying to date the chair, and some things made me thing I was looking at a chair that should be cane and not upholstered. Then I realized that there are springs in the back and the seat. The arms are attached to the sides with rounded head screws, (thinking somewhere in the 1900's probably) then I found a place where a tack was missing in the back and I was able to see a dark burlap material under the upholstery that is nailed in with tiny nails that are not exactly round and have a raised part in the center of the head instead of being flat. I couldn't find any marks or anything on it that might help identify the maker either (Unless it's under the material). I'm just not sure what to think about this chair any more. Any help? These were made both with cane and upholstery. No reason to think your example is not from the early 20th century.

Were the backs on the upholstered chairs not all the way to the seat?
