My Mum has left me a piece of Chapmans china - does anyone know where I can fins a catalogue or such like so I can identify it? If I use any search engine it just takes me to Amazon or e-bay!!
    Many thanks

The design registration number would have been used in 1894, but that does not mean the piece was made in that year. Could have been later, but not before.

Many china designs of that era would not have had am official name. It may only be known by the number hand painted below the mark.

Thank you so much, Bakersgma. Obviously Chapman's has changed hands several times over the years so I'm keen to identify this particular piece. Has anyone ever catalogued all of their products? Really appreciate your input.

I'm afraid that I have no further info on the company or this piece. Not my specialty, sorry. Others who know more or who have better references will be along, I am sure.

Thank you, Houseful. I suspected as much. Chapman's went out of business in the 1960s - I'm just not sure how early this is. Probably a 1950s piece judging by the design but I just can't find out.

Not sure how big your bowl is, here’s an earlier Chapman tea set showing a sugar bowl but it looks quite big to me so may be a slop bowl.
Here’s an Etsy cup and saucer listed as Vintage not Antique.

Thanks again. Am I right in thinking the hand written number on the bottom denotes the range? And where would we find out anything about range 1284 in this case (or 1634 in my case)?

The red number is the pattern.

Thank you for your reply. Do you happen to know what "Rd228871" denotes?

That is the registration of the design, the number referred to in post #4 above :)
