Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

There appear to be possibly three different people coming up under the name Hans Jacoby in my searches. One is the one whose papers you found listed (born 1900, died 1984). I'm also seeing entries for a Hans Jacoby 1904-1963, who was a German screenwriter and art director. Then again, am also seeing listings for art by a Hans Jacoby 1904-1949. I think some of the listings are confusing one with the other.

For example, this auction result says it's for the Hans Jacoby 1904-1949:

This one, very similar in style, says it's for the Hans Jacoby 1900-1983:
    http://www.askart.com/askart/artist.aspx?artist=11108992

This one says it's by the Hans Jacoby 1904-1963 (the one who was a screenwriter and art director):

Thanks. Pretty much I found the same. I also think the listers were not fully aware who the artist was.

    Hi,

The artist is Jean-Lucien Nicolas Jacoby, Luxembourgish, also known as Hans Jacoby. He was forced to change his surname before the 1 world war in order to be authorised to teach in Strasbourg.

Thanks for the suggestion. That is some interesting information.
But I am not sure if Jean-Lucien Nicolas Jacoby did the featured litho.
From what I am finding he did mostly sports art but possibly not limited only to the subject. Here is a war themed drawing or print attributed to him:

The images of Jean-Lucien's art that I am finding are signed with just "Jacoby" and pretty much in the same way.

I suspect yours is the Hans Jacoby of both your artnet and askart links...including a little confusion regarding lifespan dates.

I must have forgotton to say that I found a handwritten 'bergen' on the back. I guess as in Bergen, Norway.

    Hello,

In 14 October 1912, Jean-Lucien Nicolas Jacoby, receive his certificate for teaching drawing in schools of Alsace-Lorraine (still german). To obtain his certificate he was forced to acquire German nationality and to change his surname to Hans.

In December 1919, in Frankfurt, 10 lithos representing Strasbourg are published.

All these informations are coming from biography of Jean Jacoby written by Adolphe Deville.

You can also find attached 4 photos of lithos I acquired, coming the the 10 lithos serie. These lithos are signed by hand by “Hans Jacoby”. You can compare the signature with an more older litho signed “Jean Jacoby”.
