I bought this tea bowl yesterday.

It is Meissen and the pattern is known as Tischenmuster (little table).

The crossed swords have a letter in between the blades. A similar piece with similar letters in the blades was dated by Christie’s to c1730.

I don’t want to raise my hopes too much as the pattern was produced for more than a hundred years but any thoughts? Values of very old pieces can be high.

I wondered if perhaps the border pattern might hold a clue.

try to get the measurements of the 1730 teabowl and if the chinoiserie border is the same on the early one and go from there...gilding doesn't look 1730's to me but I've only handled pre 1750 Sevres so I can't compare fully ...but gilding is quite a bit duller in those early early pieces IME.

The border with the purple is much more in keeping with the very early pieces I have found. Here is the border on a c19th piece (bottom pic) together with a bowl sold by Christie’s as c1730. Neither the same as mine but older nearer

I am sure it will find the right price when I sell it. It was a very cheap buy.

I am pretty sure your piece is later, John.

sorry John but i dont think this is a genunie Meissen piece. The mark is odd. the gilding is too shiny. The green is wrong for the period and the way that the flowers painted is diffrent. but i can be wrong. can you add the link of the one sold through Christi?

Check out the marks on this one. Border pattern is similar too.

Indeed it is. Based on a Chinese original which I THINK appears more toward the latter part of the 18thc perhaps? The gilding is also awfully "brassey" ;):D for an early production IMO.

Sorry for the delay in replying to all your comments (been out all day) Now I am going to throw the cat among the pigeons.I thought I would examine the mark under a magnifying glass and go through my Rontgen book. Lo and behold I spotted a further impressed mark that I had completely missed. It is an impressed wheel. Hochst used this mark between 1750 and 1776. So could this be the mystery solved?

I haven't found another Hochst bowl with this pattern though. The plot thickens and the listing goes live soon. May delay it an hour or two. IMG_9163.jpeg IMG_9164.jpeg
