Any idea what someone would be typically using this for? It would make sense to me if it had a place for shelving, but there aren't any. No ports cut on the back for electronics.

Not really sure its purpose being fairly tall inside and I dug through google trying to find one like it w/o success.

Any purpose other than just storage for whatever you want to put in it?

The interior cabinet dimensions are roughly 23" tall x 29" wide. The whole chest is about 42" tall.

It was part of a matching set that I have been piece selling , chest of drawers, dresser, night stand, and this thing.

    Thanks

Don't think this configuration is original. Took a chest of drawers and used just the drawer fronts to make the doors. Note the rough plywood backing. Hinkle would not have done that. Can also see the "ghosts" of the original drawer runners in your next to last pic.

I think Brad has it right on this one.

You are spot on Brad. Even some shoddy craftsmanship now that I look closer. The door on the right is about 1/8" higher than the left and there is a gap at the doors when closed as well. The door hardware is crooked etc.

Imagine going through all the trouble and not doing it completely right.
