Can’t describe how much I want this quadruple Drill Press, nor how precious little use I would have for it. But it is one of the most beautiful examples of American production tools I’ve ever seen. It isn’t overpriced, but is large and tips the scales at 5000 lbs. I’m waiting a bit, posting here, as delaying tactics hoping someone else will grab it and remove temptation, but I’m a bit worried if they don’t do it by bedtime I won’t be able to sleep. Damn I’d love to have that just to LOOK at it every day. So yes I named it QUADZILLA. Somebody pleeeze buy it quick! http://wp.me/aMlEl-tu
That’s funny! The only reason I didn’t buy it immediately was that it had been repainted red. If it had the original machinery grey paint I would be helpless, my credit card would have squirted out of my wallet by itself and I’d be clearing space for it today. I think the dimensions would be about 6x4x7 feet. If I wait till end of the month, there will be a sale and I could get it for 20% less. But hopefully it’ll go away by then!
See? It is all in the eyes of the beholder....gray would never catch my attention......but that red!! However, knowing it's not the original color, I understand your hesitation. Course the fact that it's so doggone big and heavy would never be a problem for you....none whatsoever. You ARE very unique!!
Gettin’ worried, nobody’s bought it yet but I have fingers crossed that someone who likes red machines will save me from myself before it is too late. I hate these situations, I just don’t have enough willpower to fight off the hoarder side of me. I’m gonna try harder this time and remind myself that there isn’t that much free floor space left, and QUADZILLA will take up at least 24 sq. ft. When it gets here in a few weeks. Uh oh, what am I saying, I’m gonna resist!
Glad I waited, here’s one with orig paint for less than half price of the red one. Must be few people want these, hard to figure! https://www.ebay.com/itm/Leland-Gif...481817?hash=item466bdeea59:g:P-oAAOSw2iNZYkZh
AND, they'll DELIVER this one, no less!!!!!!! SUCH A DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But, which one is newer????? OR does that not matter????
They’d deliver if buyer pays is how I read it; I don’t there’s much difference in the red and grey ones, but it looks like there’s some difference in the spindles, those of red one being more complete. Ebay also lists a green 4-head by same maker that looks very different-no motors. The four units are driven by wide leather belts ultimately connected to an overhead drive shaft that powered all machines in that factory. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Le...821458?hash=item212fcc0892:g:56oAAOSwtTVZjmmo
That would be cool! I LOVE those systems but I bet you could rig up a simpler unit. There are still drive belt makers so that’s not at issue.
Did you see the condition notes in the auction? Coolant nozzles broken, lights broken, Spindles and chucks in great shape.Worked great when last under power, in storage now.”
Uh oh.... - ‘BONUS’ !!! Rare feature! Perfect! (For squashing roaches!) VERY Effective At keeping the surface it’s sits on from flying up into the ether.
Relative to the machines I’ve been buying, that one is in tip-top condition. A machinist who has run it says the important stuff works and that’s great. The lights and coolant nozzles are a couple hours’ work if that. The red one comes from a place that explicitly states they don’t test anything and don’t know if it runs or not. But they do take all returns within 30 days.
You’re right, both by L-G but the spindle arrangement is different. The grey one may be a little smaller than the red and is probably an earlier model because the knee-raising jackscrew arrangement looks more primitive. The red one has a big drum-like thing on the right-hand spindle. Dunno but maybe it is a gearbox to let the operator apply more downward force. Or maybe a Power feed. ??
There are some little clues on the red one that lead me to believe it has been run recently, a good sign. Each of the three gaps between drills has a chuck key resting there. Also there’s still a drill bit in one spindle. If it had been stored away, likely none of those would be present.
Yes. The drum thing on the right-end spindle is a Power feed, a nice feature to have. The little dial above it would be to adjust the feed rate. Red one is a deluxe model and probably later. That’s the one to buy, but dang it no one’s bought it yet. http://wp.me/aMlEl-tv
That’s the one to buy.................... Well, then you've said it ! I can feel your enthusiasm.... just bursting from the page...!! Now, go get er ....!!! You'll be a really proud Papa !
