This chair is coming to auction soon and I am interested in it. The description states this is from 1700-1720's and made from maple and ash. It has "sausage" turned posts/legs and acorn finials. Possibly from Connecticut. I am willing to bid up to $15.75 and perhaps as high as $18.00. A new record for me ;) Sorry, these are the only pic's I have until next week for preview.

First of all, I know nothing about furniture......but the one thing that strikes me about this chair is the proportions seem off to me. I suspect the legs have been cut down, the seat looks too low.
It looks too clean for a 1700's chair. Looks to be refinished and a new cane seat. Not enough honest wear showing. Is it crooked or is that just an effect of the photos?
OTOH If you like it and can get it for what you are willing to pay, go for it.

Well, If from the 1700s, and it LOOKS it, it probably would have some warping, have needed a new rush seat, and the feet would probably have been cut down at some point in time......it's definitely been refinished......I would say that ALL of my parent's antiques were refinished.....it's what they did in the fifties.....at least it's what MY parents did!!!!! And I LOVE ladderback arm chairs!!! At least that's what we always called them...........

Edit: In fact we have one similar, although not as old, feet have been shortened and bottom front stretcher has been replaced at some time, but I wouldn't sell or trade it for the world!!! Yes...refinished, yes...newer seat!!

If it really were from the period, you wouldn't get it for $15.75... I have one that looks almost like that, and I think it had been a rocker that they took the rockers of of.

    I know that's right.

Agreed, these ladder backs were built for over 100 years in america, into the 19th century so in person exam is required. It looks old in photo but has been refinished to within an inch of it's life so that does hurt value.

I would guess late 18th century (1780-1800), not early because of the arms, if chair was early they would most likely be turned, not shaped as your chair arms are. Naturally that makes a big difference value wise.

So what? Still a nice chair! Old chairs almost always have feet that are "ended out", ditto tables and almost any furniture form that have feet that touch the floor. They wear down and over time, get shorter, part of their charm really.
