Is This A Special Watch?

I recently came across this watch amongst my Grans costume jewellery. It has swiss made on the face and is stamped with what I think it 875 on the side of the case. I don't think I have heard of 875 before. I am keen to understand whether it's worth my while to have it cleaned up. Also would love to get an idea of age. Thanks so much 20201024_143704.jpg 20201024_143546.jpg 20201024_144846.jpg 20201024_144909.jpg 20201024_144932.jpg 20201024_144932.jpg 20201024_144957.jpg

Normally these old (this one I place 1920\1930) watches open like a hinged box, and :watching::peeking:I can see a little hinge below the left lug in your pic #2. The whole movement only sits fit in the box and can be removed carefully by lifting it by the crown (there is an indent in the wall of the box).
Then you can clean\wash the whole bracelet, glass and box safely!
For the movement and face itself, don't touch it! A watch reparer is mandatory;)

Thanks. I am going to try and open it. I'll let you know how I go.
I have also tracked down an antique watch repairer in Western Australia not too far from where I live. They can do any necessary repairs and clean the face

I've opened it. I'm so excited. I can make out 375 and some other numbers that may be a serial number? I think I can also make out R & ?. Does this mean anything to anyone?

Great news, and good job in removing the movement!
You're lucky to have an antique watch repairer "not too far" to fully clean your heirloom:)
The numbers look like serial number, but usually these watches used generic Swiss made movements which were incorporated by jewellers in their boxes. Anything inscribed on the movement?

There is nothing special about the watch. It is nearly worthless. The scrap metal has value.

The watch is special as it was her Grandmother's. Any attachment you have to you loved ones is special and has value.

It is indeed special and beautiful. You could get it up and running again and wear it as a tribute to your Gran.

    Thanks everyone
Also special for me because it is helping me to learn about hallmarks, hinged cases, etc etc. I had none of this knowledge a day ago. I know for you pro's you've seen hundreds of these things but I'm a novice so it's new and exciting for me. I have taken some better pics and @kyratango I also found fab.suisse on the movement which I have now googled and understand. Thanks!!! 20201025_064138.jpg 20201025_064219.jpg

Is the box from Rotherham & Sons?
If it is, maybe their address will give you a time frame.

post WWI into the 30s and especially after the crisis of 1929/30 many countries had import restrictions for a plethora of items and materials or elevated import taxes. to circumvent the tariffs and taxes most Swiss movements were separated from the cases and sent worldwide to whomever needed them. I'd concentrate on the jeweller and not on the movement . fabrication suisse with 15 jewels was a good standard.

No the box was one I borrowed from another watch. I don't seem to have a box for this particular watch but @kyratango I agree the old boxes and cases are just gorgeous. I have added a couple of pics of cases I have. 20201025_151125.jpg 20201025_151139.jpg 20201025_151156.jpg
