Times have changed! I was taught the differences between good and bad cigars, and how to smoke them, when I was sixteen. I was also gifted a sterling silver cigarette case and a lighter for my sixteenth birthday....................also taught about brandy/cognac and got a start on wine culture............sixteen year old males were considered "gentlemen in waiting" and training began at breakfast of "the day"..................

    Hi Mansons,
You have reminded me of something with your comment on upbringing. When I graduated from high school in the 1954 a distant relative whom I never got to meet gave me a present. It was a 10 Karat gold Zippo lighter. I used that lighter for years until I quit smoking for the first time. I was living in New Jersey at the time I quit. I decided to squirrel away my gold lighter and sterling cigarette holder. I pried up a board in my spare bedroom floor and stashed the items. After a couple of years I forgot about them. When I left my family and moved out I was not thinking of the treasure. After a few months I wrote to my ex and asked if she would be so kind as to send me my Grams Christmas ornaments. She did all smashed in a shoe box. I realized then she was still angry so I did not mention the smoking items. About six months later she sold the house and moved. It was too late to recover my stash. To this day I wanted to go and visit the house and ask the owner if I could pry up a floor board and recover my treasures.:eek::eek:

And here is where I differ from most people.....as a thank you, I would have invited her to dinner - on the terrace of my 25th floor apartment - which didn't have a terrace - and then told that angel to put her wings to good use................

Would they have worn spats at a special event or for 'dress' photos?

    Hi Mansons,
I must say that was the only nasty thing she ever did to me except that she NEVER remarried so she collected support from me until I retired. Last time I ever used a female lawyer. The only difference between a female lawyer and hell itself is lipstick.
After I retired she called to say her check was late. I was soooooooooooooooo happy to say that I am retired that she would not be getting a check anymore. She screamed "We will see about that". Between Uncle Sam and her about 75% of my income was gone every month. I was making more money on Soc Sec than I was working.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

My ex wiped out our checking account and savings account when he left me with three kids. We were living in a rental in a town of his choosing about 90 miles from Boston. He also sold our building in the city which was a main source of income. I was dumb enough to leave it in his name only. I didn't know until the rents were late and I called a tenant and he'd bought the building. I had to go on Welfare for 8 months until I could get a full time job and find day care for the baby. 39 years later I still haven't forgiven him.
