My mother in law passed away several years ago and she was somewhat of a hoarder and artist in her own right. When we were clearing out her house we found a lot of old artwork, this piece I thought was interesting. It measures 10x12. Any thoughts, ideas, origin, age and value would be greatly appreciated. did she sign..
where did the painting come from

    BTW..unless it's a known artist...sought after.....it's value is moot , short of decoration .....

Sorry, she was just a local artist and along with anything else, she would pick up old paintings, etchings and prints whenever she could find them. She did not paint this, it was something that she picked up somewhere. I figured this was rather old judging on condition and subject matter. I could not find a name on it anywhere, guess it's decoration??

Id guess its European . maybe English ? Id also guess its got some age . The signature may have rubbed off over time,or be under all that black gunk around the edges. I can see how it'd be considered a generic scene ,probably for a Grand Tour souvenier . That being said,I think its pretty nicely done and quite charming. If you have a black light use it on the edges . Sometimes the human eye just cant see something unaided.Often I dont see the signatures on something till I photograph it.

The canvas looks painted right to the edge, and that's not a proper canvas stretcher frame. My guess is that this has been salvaged from a larger picture.
