Featured More Info on Jac Lessman and Saginaw Furniture Shop Desk

I found this piece at Goodwill for $35.

I couldn't find much info on this desk but I knew it was old. I think it is from 1928-1930 based on what I saw from the history of Jac Lessman himself:

"In December 1928, Lessman opened his own interior design firm, Jac Lessman & Co. (changed in 1930 to Lessman Interiors)"

What style is it though? And is it 1928-30? What is the value in "ok" condition?

Anyone have any more links for me I could only find one with any amount of information.

It has screws and the number 7168 on the back. It also has dovetail joints.

Can anyone shed some light on this piece? It also said he had pieces made specifically for casinos/hotels he was an interior designer for so maybe this desk was once used in a hotel?

I think the date is spot-on. Spanish revival. Condition is not that bad but still not a lot of value. Possibly hotel furniture but not necessarily so.

You could also call it "colonial revival". "The top is finished with a stepped ogee molded edge and over hangs the case. The block and turned legs with a medial stretcher base ending on turned feet."
Here is an 18th century period "tavern" table from New Orleans with french/ spanish style elements that has a similar form.

 

You did well however, as Brad pointed out though, not a lot value these days in "brown" furniture. I would guess $100 or less on east coast USA, still, for 35 bucks i say how can you go wrong?

 

The main Spanish elements to this are the decoration on the front of the drawer and, possibly, the flared handles. As James suggests, the form is basically colonial. I did hesitate a bit in calling this Spanish revival. I agree with the $100.00 or less evaluation. You might see it in a shop cleaned up or painted going for just a tad more. Your $35.00 price is what I might expect to pay at auction. It probably would have been priced a bit higher than that in our local Goodwill.
