Featured Is there coral in this old pin?

    Looking to confirm that these are coral bits in this pin that was my Grandmother's. Are the "leaves" just pieces of mother of pearl or shell? Also, what material does the clasp look like and approximate era? Thanks for your help and knowledge.     Coral makes sense to me but could it be carnelian?

    One other thing--is the metal used on the clasp of no consequence--ie., iron or steel or something? Should I not try to polish it so the age patina is preserved?

    Hi,
    I would NOT clean it. It looks "blackened" and the pin rubbed off in pushing it through the cloth so many times.

    The pins on costume pieces were often a different metal. Steel and brass were the common ones.
